Background

Concentric was retained to provide engineering design and safety upgrades to the Elm Creek Elevator and Fertilizer plants located in Elm Creek, Manitoba. The project is a three phase upgrade.

Approach & Methodology

Concentric's scope of work for this assignment included:
1) Review of existing fixed access ladders for code compliancy and structural adequacy.
2) Review platforms, guardrails, stairs, hand rails, hoisting points, roof access, floor openings for code compliancy and structural adequacy.
3) Design and draft new/retrofit of existing ladders, platforms, guardrails, stairs, floor openings to conform to current building code requirements and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Key Challenges

One of the main challenges of this assignment was delivering a cost effective plan which utilizes their existing structural components/systems as much as possible. By retrofitting their existing infrastructure in lien of providing a whole new safety system, we were able to save costs, reduce construction time and minimize disruption to the facility.
