In August 2006, Concentric was retained to provide consulting services for a rural residential oil spill.
Extensive contamination had resulted from fuel oil having entered and been pumped from a basement sump and into a local drainage network.
The final discharge point for the drainage network was a ditch, which traversed multiple properties and ultimately discharged to a major watercourse.
Sump discharge outlets from adjacent properties also entered the drainage ditch in the same area as that of the subject site.
The challenge of the immediate remediation activities was to mitigate the ditch impacts while ensuring that flow through the entire drainage system was diverted despite the groundwater table having been very high.
Concentric’s management of the situation led to successful mitigation of impacted areas of the ditch and diversion of flow such that downstream areas of the ditch and other downstream receptors were ultimately unaffected.
