In 2006 Concentric was retained to investigate a rural residential fuel oil spill in a potable water setting. Free-phase petroleum impacts had been identified in the upper bedrock aquifer.
The site was deemed sensitive by Provincial standards, being located within 20 metres of a watercourse and having less than 2 metres of overburden.
Concentric developed a subsurface investigation strategy to effectively identify the zones of soil and groundwater impacts and subsequently implement a remedial strategy.
Given the sensitivity of the site and possible nearby receptors, i.e. drinking water wells and the adjacent river, time was of the essence.
Remedial work involved the removal of all impacted soil and weathered rock around and under the residence, and instatement of a groundwater capture and treatment program involving a Granular Activated Carbon system.
The investigation and implementation phases were completed successfully and within an accelerated timeline, despite the challenging site conditions.
